It’s the 75th anniversary of Omega’s seminal Seamaster collection this month and, while the limelight’s glaring on the likes of the James Bond favourite Seamaster Diver 300m and the ocean-delving Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra-Deep, the biggest news comes from the 75th anniversary edition of their weirdest fish of a diving watch. And by big, I mean BIG. The Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200m Summer Blue 75th Anniversary is an absolute beast.
Over the years, the Seamaster Ploprof has grown bit by bit, bloating to larger sizes that only make sense over a wet suit . Now though, we’re returning to the form of the original, uncompromising 70s model, by dropping a few mm. Not that it’s small mind you. The Seamaster Ploprof 1200m Summer Blue measures in at 55mm x 45mm (as opposed to 48mm) of solid, monobloc metal – said metal being the tech-forward alloy with the cringeworthy name, O-MEGASTEEL. In short, the anniversary edition is built like a military sub.
Colour-wise, the Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200m Summer Blue 75th Anniversary is a marked shift from the usual bright orange and white or the professional instrument we vaguely know and sometimes love. The theme for Omega’s anniversary celebrations is blue, with each shade used corresponding to each watch’s depth rating. It’s a seriously cool idea and one that in the case of the Ploprof means equally cool, dark blues to match its superb 1,200m water resistance.
Changes in size, metal and colour aside, the new edition is still easily recognisable as a Ploprof. How could it not be? Even if it didn’t have that insane helium escape valve and oversized, left-handed crown guard, the Seamaster Ploprof 1200m Summer Blue 75th Anniversary still keeps the large sword hand and technical dial layout of previous models.
An anniversary like this deserves a great movement and inside the Ploprof 1200m Summer Blue 75th Anniversary is the Omega Co-Axial calibre 8921, a METAS-certified, anti-magnetic piece of watchmaking with 60-hour power reserve. Sealed in by a Poseidon-engraved caseback (a running theme of the celebrations) and protected by 1,200m water resistance – the second highest in Omega’s line-up – it’ll keep you ticking well below where any sane person would want to dive.
Honestly, of all the 75th anniversary Seamaster editions, this is the one I’m most happy to see make a return. I can’t wear the current one, let alone this behemoth, but that’s not stopped me buying a classic Seiko Tuna before and it doesn’t stop me wanting this. Between the cool blue look and the technical improvements, the Seamaster Ploprof 1200m Summer Blue 75th Anniversary edition is in many ways the ultimate dive watch – which it should be for a price tag of £13,200.
